MY Review: Five Quarters of the Orange
Five Quarters of the OrangeFive Quarters of the Orange by Joanne Harris

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

WOW! What a great book! What a fantastic story! This book is 1,000 times better than Chocolat. After having read this book, I can honestly say that I am now a fan of Joanne Harris.

Almost all the reviews that I read about this book said the same thing: It started off slowly, and about page 100, a mystery was introduced. I, too, can say the same thing, the story was slow at first. As I read the Kindle version, I can't tell you whether around page 100 the mystery was introduced. But yes, at some point in the story, you realize that there is a mystery, and you are hooked. I couldn't put the book down. Every time, I got to the end of a chapter, I wanted to go for more, even though, I had promised myself as I started a new chapter that that was the chapter I was going to stop reading for that particular day.

The story, the characters, and the plot were well thought out. Each imagery was so intricate. I am surprised that this book has not been picked up for a movie. I so would love to see it.

Basically, in order not to give the mystery away—which by the way is not over till the last word is done—all I can say is that the story is about a 65-year-0ld woman retelling an event, during World War II, that happened during the summer when she was 9 years old. She reconstructs the events by using her own memories and by reading her mother's journal (which is full of codes, recipes, entries that were out of sequence, etc. Slowly, the truth is uncovered, and she finds that there was more to the events that led to the final tragedy than she knew.

Five Quarters of the Orange is not a happy story. It is a sad story of a dysfunctional, feral family. But I can't say that there's no hope in the end either.
