What a Mess—And Why I Haven't Posted about Patrick
I have been away from LJ for a reason. I've been involved with the politics that evolved over Patrick and his guardians. I also got very involved with my bhrescue.com blog. I wrote many essays about animal abuse, games that promote animal abuse, sculptors that killed dogs for the heck of it, etc. They are all here: http://bhrescue.com. My readership increased. But I always consider LJ my home. I have read all your posts. I just haven't commented.

So, Patrick is thriving. He is gaining weight and is getting stronger as the days go by. But, unfortunately, politics is getting in the way and we don't get updates.

There are three entities, four if you count those of us who are working on changing the animal abuse laws, involved here. The American Humane Society (AHS), the Garden State Veterinary Services (GSVS), and the New Jersey Society for Prevention of Cruelty for Animals (NJ SPCA).

When the maintenance man found Patrick in the garbage chute, he called 911. In turn, 911 called NJ SPCA, as they are the police officers who handle animal abuse, as well as they are the first responders. Arthur Skinner, one of the NJ SPCA officers, who is now

Arthur Skinner and an unidentified fan from the Patrick's Movement.
considered a hero among us, was the first person to see Patrick and he took him to the AHS's Newark veterinary hospital.

At the hospital, the veterinary staff immediately put him on intravenous fluid. Patrick's temperature was so low that it did not even register on the thermometer. Patrick was covered with heating pads and blankets. One of the vet techs held Patrick in her arms, soothed him and gave him warmth, comfort, and bits of food. The story goes that Patrick looked up with gratitude in his eyes to all of the staff, and the veterinarian made the decision to try to revive him.

As soon as Patrick was a bit stabilized, he was ambulanced to Tinton Falls to GSVS, a 24-hour referral emergency hospital. It was felt that if he died during the night, Patrick would know that everyone loved and cared about him and treated him gently and lovingly. He amazed everyone by surviving with the 24-hour emergency care that he was given.

At GSVS, Patrick was given a blood transfusion, a bath, and even a walk! In honor of the first day of his rebirth, he was named Patrick—in honor of St. Patrick's Day, with the hope that he has the luck of the Irish!

GSVS is an awesome hospital The staff is very caring and sweet. They were so nice to Patrick's fan. They supplied photos of his progress on a daily basis. And as often as they could, they supplied us with videos. The staff would communicate with the fans via Facebook, and the fans, in gratitude, would send gifts, not only to Patrick but to the staff of the hospital as well.

A staff member of GSVS placed an adoption request to adopt Patrick. None of us know who that staff member is, but we all think that it is the Doctor and his wife, who happens to be the administrator of the hospital.

Then, the shit hit the fan. AHS decided that they were the only ones who owned the photographs and videos of Patrick. AHS put a gag order on GSVS. We were no longer allowed to see any pictures, receive any news, and view any videos of Patrick. AHS declared Patrick as dangerous and wanted to remove him from the hospital and place him in their shelter.

Now, AHS has a horrible reputation with their shelter. They are a high-kill shelter. Many of their animals don't come out alive. Moreover, they had recently let a dangerous dog that was brought in by the owner to be euthanized because the dog was so aggressive to be adopted by an elderly lady. Rather than euthanize the animal, they placed him on the adoption list, let this elderly woman adopt him, and she was mauled by the dog. Anyway, the Patrick Movement was in an uproar about AHS's decision. The NJ SPCA got involved, as did the mayor of Newark.

GSVS countered the gag order and the relinquish order. They went to court and obtained rights to keep Patrick in their premises at least till Kisha Curtis's (the alleged abuser trial. The custody trial for who gets to keep Patrick is set for June 2.

Kisha Curtis went on trial, pleaded not guilty, and she will be going to grand jury. There it will be decided whether there's enough evidence to go for a trial by jury or judge.

There was quite a bit of turnout of Patrick supporters during Kisha's trial. The news media was surprised to see so many supporting Patrick.

Now, I ask you, who goes to trial wearing t-shirt and jeans? This woman had no class. She also claimed that she couldn't take care of Patrick because she had no money. But she has money for tips for her nail, hair extensions, etc. Ah, and she would change the story as to when she got Patrick. Some days she had him for two days only, other times, a week, etc. But needless to say, for him to get to where he was, he had to be starved for a long time. And, by the way, she never had a name for him.

Yesterday, for mother's day, we all got a present from Patrick, two new videos. AHS must have softened up. Maybe the Patrick's Movement had a reason for that.

This video is a direct response to AHS. AHS claimed that Patrick had no manners and was not taught properly at the hospital. This was an unfounded claim. After all, Patrick was extremely ill and only recently could be the right time to teach him.

And here's Patrick walking. Look how great his body looks.

And, my final word is about the claim AHS made about GSVS. It was so off the mark that I wrote a long blog refuting their claim. My little blog that only gets about 200–500 readers a day went viral. I was getting 4,000+ hits per day. It's nothing when we compare it with EW, but it was nice to be read by so many people.

If you are interested, you can read it here. I'm warning you, it's long.

Also, if you want to view the larger versions of the photos, just click on them.

He looks great! I can't believe AHS would even suggest he's not being handled properly!!! But now I know why you haven't been posting any updates. Glad to hear Patrick's still doing well.

That "behaviorist's" report was such a biased, reprehensible piece of work, it beggars the imagination. My mouth literally hung open in disbelief when I read it. AHS is, I hope, digging their own grave with this. It's really clear that they see Patrick as nothing more than a cash cow. Shameful.

I'm off to read your post now.

I'm not a huge fan of the AHS to begin with, but this takes the cake. How frustrating!
