Five Questions Meme

Comment to this post, and I will list five things I associate with you. They might make sense or they might be totally random. Then post that list, with your commentary, to your LJ (or just add a reply back to me). Other people (including me) can get lists from you, and the meme merrily perpetuates itself.

The following were given to me by

Garrison Keillor
I became a fan of Garrison Keillor in 1984. I went to the library to find a book to read. At that time, I was an avid reader of essays, and I came across to his first book: Happy to Be Here. I was so intrigued about him that I tried to find out anything that I could about him. In those days, there were no computers and no Google. So finding things about authors was not easy. But somehow, I managed to find out that he had a radio show named A Prairie Home Companion (APHC), which aired every Saturday at 6 pm on one of my local PBS radio stations (WETA). Sadly, WETA doesn't broadcast the show anymore, but another station (WAMU) does. I became so mesmerized by this man's voice and talent for story telling that I never missed a show. In fact, in 1985, I started recording every show. (I have an extensive library.) Garrison wrote his first novel and published it in 1985. Naturally, I bought the book. I believe I have every book he wrote.

When computers became accessible, I joined a BBS that talked about the radio show and met many new friends who also liked him. We discussed the show (which was very eclectic with the type of music and performers that were hired on a weekly basis, the comedy, and the News from Lake Wobegone (LW)—a 20-minute unscripted monologue about a fictional town and the mishaps that residents experienced that he told every Saturday during the last hour of his 2-hour show. Then, after Garrison remarried, he moved to his wife's country (Denmark), and there was silence on Saturday Nights. I think that he missed us as much as we missed him because he moved back to the United States and started broadcasting from NYC. His show was renamed to "The American Radio Company of the Air." The show had a different flavor. More sophisticated music was featured, a bit different from the down-home flavor he had with APHC. But the News from Lake Wobegon was still part of the show, which made me happy.

Also, my BBS friends and I had a tape-exchange system. If one of us missed the show, you could count on someone who would send you a copy.  Garrison, also known as GK, was very gracious in letting us record and exchange tapes. We were all breaking copyright rules, which didn't seem to bother him. And, here's proof that he knew of our "Illegal" activities: GK had a tape of his 10th anniversary show for sale. We, from the BBS group, all had bought a copy. One night, a person went to a live show and he wanted to buy the 10th anniversary tape (back then you could only get cassette tapes). He started telling the clerk that he had bought a copy, but one of the tapes of the 4 set of tapes somehow got ruined. The clerk went to her supervisor to see if he could buy just one tape. The supervisor came back with the address to the BBS and told him to contact one of us. She said that she was told by GK that one of us could record the tape for him. It would be a waste of money when one of us could do it for him. How about them apples?

I got to meet GK numerous times and I got to see a number of his live shows. I even went to one with katje0711, her cousin, and divka. And we got to meet GK there, too. He was so gracious. The line to talk to him was long. But he stayed for as long as it was need to talk with all the people who wanted to talk with him. He never cut us short and he talked for as long as we had something to say. And we if didn't know what to say, he had the right questions to ask. I can never tire of being his fan.

Michael Emerson
I never heard of Michael Emerson before LOST. I loved the show before he even joined the cast. Btu the minute I heard him scream "Help. Somebody help me," during the second season of LOST, I became his fan. To this date, I cannot get over his acting abilities. He, I think, livened up a show that was so great to begin with. And I think the chemistry that Michael Emerson, Terry O'Quinn, and Jorge Garcia have playing together is just amazing. I'd love to see these three actors together again.

I don't know how I got to know Michael's brother. I just know that we were friends on the Internet. That friendship fizzled out once Michael became famous. I guess his brother was afraid that I was trying to get close to him to get closer to his brother, which was very far from my intentions.

I am the webmaster of the first Michael Emerson website, I handle a forum about him, and a photo gallery. My original photo gallery was amazing (even if I have to say so). I had every photo available about him, lots of icons, and fan made photos. I own the web server (in fact, the server is in my house). Unfortunately, the hard drive went bad, and I lost everything. I reconstructed the web site, but I don’t have it in me to redo the photo gallery.

Basset Hounds
I love dogs. My husband was not a dog lover. He loved cats. When we finally settled and bough our house, he gave the family a choice of getting a dog or a cat. The children and I voted for a dog. He asked us to get a basset hound. He thought that they were sedentary animals. Hahahahahaha, what a joke. Basset hounds are full of stamina, they remain puppies for 3 years, and they are stubborn as a mule. I fell in love with the breed. Hubby learned to love them. He had no choice. I am an animal rescuer. We’ve had so many bassets come and go and live with us while I fostered. Now, we are down to 3 bassets. But to me, there’s no dogs who can love you as much as a hound.

I’m very family oriented. I love my family. I also have a very diverse family. My daughter married a man of Taiwanese background, and my son married a woman of Pakistani background. Tolerance and acceptance is a must. I now have 2 + 3 grandchildren. My daughter (miss_sophia) has a girl and a boy. My son’s first born (a boy) is due in November. My daughter-in-law’s sister (who in our family is also my daughter-in-law) has a boy and is due to have another boy in December. (That’s where the +3 comes from.)

Photography is a hobby that I picked up recently. I love taking pictures and entering contest. I’ve won a few prizes. I just wish I had more time to devote to the hobby.

Wow! I didn't expect an essay! LOL I love how the first topic is the longest and then the second and by the time you reach photography it tapes off. LOL

LOL, I thought the same thing. I guess, GK is the one that I am the biggest fan of. I can talk about him for hours.

Great story about GK! So, it sounds like that's your first fandom of sorts.

I thought you said you and Patrick were still friends.

I guess you are right. It's long-standing fandom, too. I can't believe it, but it's been 27 years since I first discovered him and I still like him a lot.

Patrick and I haven't exchanged any communication for over 2 years. He didn't even care when someone told him that I was ill in the hospital. I don't remember who told him.

That's what I thought about Patrick, but the last time I asked you about him, you said you two were still friends. I'm the one that told him you were in the hospital.

Well, in a sort of weird way, we are friends, distant friends. I just don't communicate with him anymore. But the occasional time that I had to ask him something, he answers me. Who knows what's between him and his brother as well. Fame and fortune sometimes divides people for some reason or another.

That's right, it was you who told him. I just couldn't remember it right.

I'd be happy to send you any of the photos I culled from your AMAZING gallery before it crashed.

Oh, and I thought of you as I cried just reading the review of this book:
After your photo on facebook today, it pushed me over the edge. So fucking sweet and sad.

anyway, I'd love 5 topics-sock it to me.

Wow, that book sounds like something I'd like to read.

Which picture are you talking about? I post so many heart-wrenching photos.

I will look to see what topics to give you.
