Book Review: Canada

CanadaCanada by Richard Ford

Wow, this was an amazing book. We know from the beginning that the protagonist recounts his story. His life-altering story that begins with his parents robbing a bank and later involves some murders. This is not a a spoiler, as the the book begins with these two lines:

"First, I'll tell about the robbery our parents committed. Then about the murders, which happened later."

The story is told as if the words are a painting. First, you see a bit of the picture and slowly the canvas is filled up with more and more details. You learn about his family life before the bank is robbed and what caused his parents to commit the crime and what made them not be able to weigh other options. You slowly learn what happened to Dell's twin sister and how her life was changed by her own choices and how Dell's life was changed for his lack of choices.

I won't say anymore. I found the story just fascinating. I read this book in 3 days.
